US Dollar Forex Holds Firm as Fed Pause Puts Euro and GDP Data in Focus
OCTOBER 28, 2026
The euro stayed under pressure in the forex market on Wednesday, sliding toward the $1.11 area as traders positioned for a Federal Reserve decision later in the U.S. session and a European Central Bank policy update shortly after. The move kept EUR/USD near its weakest levels in months and left the single currency struggling to attract dip buyers despite signs that some short-term momentum gauges are becoming stretched.
The immediate driver is not only the expected level of interest rates, but the message central banks deliver around the next step. Markets broadly expect the Federal Reserve to keep policy steady, yet the U.S. dollar has retained support as investors focus on whether policymakers push back against rate-cut speculation or keep a tightening bias alive after firmer U.S. confidence data. That has made it difficult for the euro to recover against the greenback.
EUR/USD has been trading close to 1.1120 to 1.1140 in early Wednesday dealing, with the pair extending a multi-session decline as the dollar holds weekly gains. The U.S. currency has benefited from steady Treasury yields, cautious risk positioning and demand for liquidity before the Fed statement and press conference.
For currency traders, the key issue is whether the Fed frames the current pause as a temporary hold or as a more durable wait-and-see stance. A more hawkish tone could keep the dollar bid and push EUR/USD toward the next psychological support zone around 1.10. A softer message, particularly one that acknowledges pressure on growth or credit-sensitive parts of the economy, could trigger a euro short-covering rebound.
Recent U.S. data has complicated the trade. Consumer confidence improved in October, reducing the urgency for an immediate policy pivot, while inflation concerns remain part of the Fed debate. That mix has encouraged traders to treat the policy announcement as a volatility event rather than a simple rate decision.
The euro is also facing its own regional headwinds. Concerns over French public finances and elevated sovereign borrowing costs have added a political-risk premium to the single currency, especially as investors reassess fiscal stability across the euro area. The pressure has not developed into a broad euro crisis, but it has been enough to limit rallies when the dollar is firm.
The European Central Bank decision is therefore important for more than rates. Traders want to know whether officials sound confident about eurozone growth, inflation and financial conditions, or whether they acknowledge that tighter market borrowing costs are becoming a drag. Any sign that the ECB is moving closer to an easing discussion could leave the euro vulnerable, while a steady and cautious message may help stabilize the pair.
Technically, the euro’s decline has left the market sensitive to a reversal if the Fed fails to strengthen the dollar narrative. However, momentum still favors sellers while EUR/USD remains below the mid-1.12s. A recovery above that area would suggest the market is reducing bearish euro exposure, while another rejection could keep the focus on the 1.10 handle.
The coming sessions could define the euro’s short-term direction into month-end. A firm Fed message combined with a cautious ECB would reinforce dollar control and keep EUR/USD on the defensive. Conversely, a neutral Fed and a resilient ECB tone could encourage traders to lock in dollar gains and rebuild euro exposure from oversold levels.
Until the central-bank sequence is complete, the forex market is likely to remain headline-sensitive. The euro’s path now depends on whether policy guidance validates the recent dollar rally or gives investors a reason to challenge it.
