British Pound Forex Holds Near 17-Month High Against Euro as UK Budget Looms

OCTOBER 27, 2026

The British pound remained close to a 17-month high against the euro on Tuesday, keeping sterling in focus in the forex market as traders prepared for the UK budget and a packed run of central bank decisions. The move came even as the pound eased modestly against the US dollar, showing that the latest sterling story is being driven as much by weakness in the single currency as by confidence in UK assets.

EUR/GBP hovered near the lower end of its recent range, with sterling supported by relative resilience against a euro pressured by elevated energy costs, French fiscal stress and wider caution around euro-area growth. Against the dollar, however, the pound was more restrained as the greenback firmed before the Federal Reserve’s policy decision and investors avoided aggressive positions ahead of major event risk.

Sterling Strength Is Most Visible Against the Euro

The pound’s outperformance versus the euro has become one of the clearer G10 forex themes heading into the middle of the week. Sterling’s advance has been helped by the market’s view that the UK budget must satisfy bond investors while also addressing household cost pressures. That balance matters for currency traders because any sign of fiscal slippage could quickly lift gilt yields and revive volatility in GBP pairs.

For now, the pound is benefiting from comparison. The euro has struggled through October as investors monitor France’s bond market, concerns over public finances and the drag from high energy prices. Those pressures have limited demand for the single currency even when broader risk sentiment has been steady, allowing the pound to hold near multi-month highs on the cross.

Dollar and Fed Risk Limit GBP/USD Upside

The pound’s softer tone against the US dollar highlights a separate driver: global rate expectations. The dollar edged higher against several major currencies as traders positioned for the Federal Reserve decision, with attention likely to fall on any signal about whether policymakers are still worried about inflation pressure and resilient US activity.

If the Fed sounds more hawkish than expected, GBP/USD could struggle to extend gains even if sterling remains firm against the euro. A steadier or more cautious Fed message, by contrast, could allow traders to refocus on UK-specific developments and the pound’s relative performance within Europe.

UK Budget Becomes the Next Sterling Catalyst

The immediate risk for the British pound is the UK budget. Currency markets will be watching whether the government presents a plan that reassures investors on borrowing, debt costs and inflation without creating a fresh growth shock. A credible fiscal package could keep sterling supported against the euro, while a budget that raises doubts about funding or political stability may trigger a reversal.

Technically, traders are likely to watch whether EUR/GBP can break below recent support or whether profit-taking lifts the pair back into its prior range. For GBP/USD, the key test is whether sterling can hold above recent support while the dollar reacts to the Fed. Until those events pass, the pound’s strongest signal remains its relative strength against the euro rather than a broad-based rally across the forex market.
