Reasons to Travel Solo Over 50

If you’re over 50, you’re a Baby Boomer. By this time in your life, you may have a few grandchildren, are caring for one or both of your parents, or have an ex-wife/husband. With these meaningful demands on your life, a sabbatical is long overdue.

Right now, travel solo tours are flourishing. Yes, the volume of solo travelers over 50 is booming. That means numerous seniors will travel alone by plane for the first time this year. Others are set in their ways and demand a reason to give up their comfort zone. Well, we have them!

5 Good Reasons to Travel Solo Over 50

  1. It’s not surprising for people over 50 to face a mid-life challenge. It could be time for a change. Traveling opens up all kinds of opportunities to reflect on the past and to put life in perspective. When you travel solo, you can think without having the bias of friends and family around you.
  2. Having a long-term relationship with someone can affect you in many ways. Although you may be happy, you may still need a little 'me' time. Solo travel could be just what the doctor ordered to spice up even a healthy relationship.
  3. If you divorced recently or are single suddenly, solo travel could give you a boost of energy and self-confidence. You will need it to get back into the dating world.
  4. Traveling could relieve you of stress which is a leading contributor to many serious health issues. Plan a trip to someplace you can have the best of both worlds. Choose a destination in which you can relax or turn up the volume without having to leave the venue.
  5. For some, the empty nest can be a lonely time, but for some singles over 50, it’s a joyous occasion. In either case, it’s the right time for you to travel solo. We don't recommend taking this trip with a travel companion. This indulgence is for you... the new you. Discover the person hidden inside you and enjoy!

The Benefits of Solo Travel Over 50

Having the ability to choose gives us a sense of authority over our own lives. However, it comes with the responsibility of accepting the consequences of our choices. At some point in our lives, it would benefit us if we take a brief break from adulting and do something for ourselves out of character. Solo travel could be that opportunity.

  1. There’s something about traveling solo or independently that lifts a person’s self-esteem. You realize your true worth when you stand alone. If you haven’t been the decision-maker in your relationships or career, knowing you can pull off traveling to a new place on your own is rewarding. When you’re not having to rely on anyone but yourself, you get to know yourself again.
  2. Taste the power. Some of us have had little chance to make dumb mistakes that make great stories or to take risks. We’ve had to make safe, adult decisions early in life. It will feel good to do what we want without having to face ridicule from our partners, parents, or other authority figures. With this in mind, rent the fast car and rev it up, get a tattoo, or ride the skyline.
  3. Travel solo over 50 and reduce stress levels. If there’s nothing urgent back at home, take your time. You’re on vacation, no schedules allowed! Try walking instead of jumping on the tour bus, sip tea instead of coffee, or just sit by the lake and enjoy a fresh-out-the-oven blueberry muffin. If you’d rather do things differently, there’s always a cruise ship leaving port.

Cruising Solo

There’s always a solo travel group planning to cruise the seas, too, although you may want to take advantage of travel tours for singles over 40 by air. The beauty of taking a cruise is they take care of everything. You don’t have to think about what to do, what or where to eat, the town's crime rate, or flying alone for the first time. All you have to do is board the ship. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Yes, and that’s not all.

The rules for single travel tours 50+ have changed. Before, booking a cruise meant you’d have to pay for double occupancy if you travel solo. Now, tour agents are offering low cost “single friendly” tours. How? They provide a “guaranteed share” program in which they pair you with a like-minded roommate. However, if they can’t find a match, you have the option to pay a reduced rate or none at all.
