Zcash Leads Crypto Market Losses as ZEC Liquidations Shake Altcoin Risk
OCTOBER 9, 2026
Ethereum remained under pressure on Friday as fresh crypto fund withdrawals and forced position unwinds kept traders cautious across the digital asset market. ETH traded near $2,500 after an intraday slide toward the low $2,400 area, leaving the token vulnerable to another test of short-term support if exchange flows and derivatives positioning fail to stabilize.
The latest market tone was shaped by renewed outflows from U.S. spot Ether products, which extended a multi-session redemption streak and reinforced a broader rotation away from leveraged crypto exposure. While Bitcoin also saw fund withdrawals, Ether appeared more exposed to position stress, with reported ETH liquidations outpacing many other large-cap tokens during the latest selloff.
The key concern for traders is not simply one day of withdrawals, but the persistence of the move. Spot Ether funds had previously served as a visible institutional demand gauge for Ethereum, especially as investors linked ETH to tokenization, stablecoin settlement, DeFi activity and on-chain financial infrastructure. Consecutive outflows now make that demand signal less convincing in the near term.
For the crypto market, ETF redemptions can have an outsized psychological impact because they arrive at the same time as weaker spot momentum. When fund flows turn negative while price support is already being tested, short-term investors often reduce exposure first and reassess the longer-term adoption thesis later.
That does not erase Ethereum’s structural case. Developers, asset managers and market infrastructure firms continue to focus on tokenized funds, stablecoin rails and settlement use cases that rely on programmable blockchain networks. However, the current tape shows that institutional narratives may not be enough to offset redemptions when macro risk appetite, leverage and momentum all move against the asset at once.
Derivatives positioning is the second pressure point. The latest liquidation wave showed how quickly crowded long exposure can turn into spot selling pressure when ETH breaks short-term levels. A move below the recent intraday low near $2,400 would likely put traders on alert for a deeper reset, especially if open interest remains elevated and funding conditions fail to cool.
For now, the market reaction looks defensive rather than disorderly. ETH’s ability to hold the $2,400 to $2,500 zone matters because that area is becoming a near-term sentiment line for both ETF investors and leveraged traders. A recovery above recent breakdown levels would suggest that outflows are being absorbed, while repeated failures could encourage fresh hedging across altcoins.
The broader crypto market is also watching whether weakness stays concentrated in major ETF-linked assets or spreads into smaller tokens. If Ethereum stabilizes while redemptions slow, traders may return to selective risk-taking in DeFi and tokenization-linked names. If outflows persist, the market could remain focused on liquidity preservation rather than new adoption themes.
The immediate outlook for Ethereum is now tied to three signals: daily ETF flows, liquidation intensity and spot demand around support. A pause in redemptions would help rebuild confidence, particularly if ETH holds above the recent low and derivatives leverage continues to fall. Without that improvement, rallies may be treated as opportunities to reduce risk rather than rebuild long exposure.
In the bigger picture, Ethereum still sits at the center of several crypto market growth themes, including stablecoins, tokenization and decentralized finance. The near-term challenge is that those themes are competing with a more urgent market question: whether institutional products are still attracting enough capital to support prices during periods of volatility.
