Nasdaq Leads Index Market Lower as AI Stocks and Oil Shock Hit Wall Street
OCTOBER 28, 2026
Nasdaq-linked index futures moved higher on Wednesday, October 28, as traders leaned back into growth and artificial intelligence exposure before the Federal Reserve’s policy decision and another round of heavyweight technology earnings. The move kept the tech-heavy benchmark in focus after Tuesday’s rebound, when the Nasdaq Composite outperformed broader Wall Street gauges and chip-related shares helped repair some of last week’s damage.
The latest setup leaves the index market caught between two powerful forces: relief that the Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged this afternoon, and caution that policymakers may still push back against premature easing bets if inflation pressure remains sticky. That tension is especially important for the Nasdaq complex, where long-duration earnings expectations make valuations sensitive to Treasury yields and rate guidance.
Futures pricing and premarket trading pointed to a modestly firmer tone for Nasdaq exposure, while the broader U.S. index picture was more mixed. Investors are preparing for the Federal Reserve decision at 2 p.m. Eastern time, followed by Chair commentary that could shape expectations for December and early 2027. A steady-rate decision would not remove policy risk, but it would give equity bulls room to argue that the central bank is moving more carefully after tightening last month.
The bond market is a key part of the story. Treasury yields have steadied after a volatile stretch, helping growth shares regain footing. For the Nasdaq index, the most supportive outcome would be a policy message that acknowledges inflation risks without signaling an imminent second hike. A more forceful warning on prices, however, could quickly revive pressure on richly valued software, semiconductor and platform stocks.
Recent economic data have added to the balancing act. Consumer confidence improved in October, easing fears of an abrupt demand slowdown, but inflation readings due later in the week remain capable of shifting the tone. Index traders are therefore treating Wednesday’s rally attempt as conditional rather than confirmed.
The Nasdaq rebound also reflects renewed interest in AI-linked shares, particularly after a stronger tone across semiconductor and cloud infrastructure names. That matters because leadership has narrowed at several points this year, leaving the index dependent on a relatively small group of megacap and chip-related companies. When those groups rise together, the Nasdaq can outperform even if the average stock is less convincing.
Alphabet and Microsoft earnings after the close are expected to be a major test of that trade. Investors are likely to focus less on headline revenue alone and more on cloud growth, AI monetization, capital spending and margin discipline. The market has rewarded companies that can connect AI investment to durable demand, while punishing signs that infrastructure spending is rising faster than near-term returns.
That makes the session important for index breadth. If earnings confirm that AI demand is spreading across cloud, chips and enterprise software, the Nasdaq could extend its recovery and challenge resistance from last week’s selloff. If results show pressure on margins or slower customer conversion, the same concentration that powered the index higher could become a vulnerability.
From a market-structure perspective, the Nasdaq’s Tuesday advance helped stabilize sentiment after a pullback from October highs. Still, futures gains ahead of a Federal Reserve decision can fade quickly if the policy message surprises traders. Short-term support is likely to be judged by whether buyers defend the prior session’s breakout areas, while resistance sits near the recent recovery zone that marked the start of last week’s decline.
For now, the index market is sending a cautiously constructive signal. Fed pause expectations, firmer AI leadership and anticipation of megacap earnings are giving Nasdaq bulls a fresh argument. The risk is that all three supports must hold at once. A hawkish Fed tone, a jump in yields or disappointing AI spending commentary could turn Wednesday’s early strength into another test of whether Wall Street’s most crowded growth trade still has room to run.
