Australian Dollar Holds Firm Before Reserve Bank of Australia Decision as US CPI Looms

Australian Dollar Holds Firm Before Reserve Bank of Australia Decision as US CPI Looms

AUGUST 10, 2026

The Australian Dollar moved to the front of the forex calendar on Monday as traders positioned for the Reserve Bank of Australia's August 10-11 policy meeting and a U.S. inflation release that could reset short-term US Dollar direction. With the RBA cash rate target at 4.35% after the June hold, the market is treating this week's statement as a test of whether officials are still willing to lean hawkish while domestic inflation remains above the comfort zone.

The setup gives AUD/USD a two-sided catalyst: a firmer RBA tone could support yield differentials, while a hotter U.S. CPI reading would likely revive demand for the US Dollar. That mix has kept spot trading cautious rather than euphoric, with the currency holding near the psychologically important 0.70 area recently instead of breaking into a clean trend.

RBA meeting puts yield spread back in focus

For currency desks, the immediate question is not only whether the RBA changes rates, but how it frames the balance between sticky prices, household demand and global growth risks. A pause accompanied by language that keeps another increase on the table would be different for the Australian Dollar than a pause that emphasizes cooling demand and weaker external conditions.

Inflation remains the anchor of that debate. Annual CPI around 4% is still above the central bank's target band, while recent commentary from officials has pushed back against premature easing expectations. That means the Australian Dollar could remain sensitive to any wording on services prices, labor-market resilience and productivity.

US CPI and China sentiment limit a simple Aussie trade

The foreign-exchange market is also waiting for U.S. inflation because the Dollar side of AUD/USD remains controlled by Federal Reserve repricing and Treasury yield moves. Softer U.S. price data would make it easier for high-beta currencies to extend gains, while a stronger reading could quickly pull the pair lower even if the RBA sounds firm.

China-linked sentiment adds another filter. The Australian Dollar often trades as a liquid proxy for Asia demand and commodity confidence, so any disappointment in Chinese activity data or equity risk appetite can blunt the support that would normally come from a hawkish domestic rate outlook.

Technical tone stays cautious before the catalysts

Near term, traders are likely to watch whether AUD/USD can hold the 0.70 zone on policy headlines and then build momentum above recent highs. Failure to defend that area would suggest the market is prioritizing U.S. Dollar strength and external growth concerns over Australia's rate premium.

That leaves the Australian Dollar in a narrow but potentially volatile corridor: supported by the possibility of a hawkish RBA signal, capped by U.S. inflation risk and vulnerable to China headlines. Until those catalysts clear, the cleaner trade may be volatility itself rather than a one-way directional bet.
